Ablaye Mbaye
Guinean rapper and songwriter, founding member of Degg J Force 3 and president-CEO of Meurs Libre Prod — named Ambassador of Culture of the Republic of Guinea
News
October 2026 — Ambassador of Culture of the Republic of Guinea. On 26 October 2026, Ablaye Mbaye announced that he had been raised by the President of the Republic, Mamadi Doumbouya, to the rank of Ambassador of Culture of the Republic of Guinea — recognition of nearly thirty years of commitment to Guinean music and heritage. A few days earlier, he had saluted the 8th edition of the Lassiry Hip-Hop Festival and its training programmes for young people, and told his story in the Vibe Podcast interview, "Certaines histoires ne se racontent qu'une fois" (see the "Watch" section below). Full portrait: "From the ghettos of Boulbinet to the Republic's honours".
Biography
Ablaye Mbaye — alias Skandal — is a Guinean rapper and songwriter. He grew up in the ghettos of Boulbinet, the historic working-class district of the Kaloum commune, in the heart of Conakry — the district of the port and the RTG, not far from the presidential palace —, the neighbourhood his group also comes from. In 1997, with his brother Moussa M'Baye and Moussa Camara, alias 2pac, he founded Degg J Force 3 — "the truth force 3" in Wolof — which would become one of the flagship groups of Guinean urban music.
The group broke through in 1999: their song "Cri du cœur" won the "best Guinean hip-hop song" prize at the Rap'Oussins young talent contest. Two years later, the album Mach Allah, recorded in Dakar and sung in Malinké, Soussou, Wolof, Pulaar, French and English, sold more than 78,000 copies and collected the prizes — best album and best hip-hop sales at the K7 d'Or, best album at the Djembé d'Or (2002). The albums Reste Indépendant (2009) and Débrouillard (2011) confirmed a committed Afro-rap that awakens consciences and draws its inspiration from the rich culture of the African continent.
An artist, Ablaye Mbaye is also a builder. In 2004, the group's members founded the SARL Degg J Force 3 Bankhi, bringing together the label Meurs Libre Prod (MLP) — of which he is co-founder and president-CEO —, the concert and international touring structure Urban Afreeka, and Mach Allah Studios. The label produces Guinean urban music, runs the Guinea Urban Tour between Europe and North America and opened an office in Montreal in 2013, MLP Boss, to carry its productions internationally. A caring mentor to the next generation — King Alasko grew up under his wing —, he is also presented by the Guinean press as commissioner general of the BIEGUIP.
His commitment goes beyond music: with Degg J Force 3, he takes part in AIDS awareness and, through the humanitarian association 7ème Continent, in raising funds to distribute medical equipment in Guinea and Benin. Training, passing on, making things shine: when he salutes the training programmes of the 8th Lassiry Hip-Hop Festival in October 2026, he is following the thread of a whole life.
On 26 October 2026, that commitment received the Republic's recognition: President Mamadi Doumbouya raised him to the rank of Ambassador of Culture of the Republic of Guinea. "Guinea deserves to be known, celebrated and loved to the height of its human, cultural and natural riches," he wrote in accepting the distinction — an honour he shares with the artists, creators, technicians and creative youth of the country. He who grew up in the ghettos of Boulbinet now stands in the honours of the Republic: a powerful symbol for the youth of Conakry's working-class neighbourhoods.
