Baaba Maal was born on 13 June 1953 in Podor, Fouta-Toro, in northern Senegal, and learned from the early ages of traditional pulaar songs and instruments.

In 1985 he founded in Dakar the Daande Lenol group ("the voice of the people") with his friend Mansour Seck: the traditional sounds meet electric guitars and keyboards.

The world success came in 1994 with the album Fir'in Fouta; follow Nomad Soul, Missing You and long tours that made him one of Africa's great voices.

His voice also crosses the cinema: he participates in Black Panther's and Wakanda Forever's soundtrack for Marvel, and lends his themes to the Wakanda world.

In 2023, he published Being, his fourteenth studio album, and was raised in 2026 to the rank of Commander of the National Order of Mali, who was already Commander of the National Order of the Lion of Senegal.
