Bilal Moufok, says Cheb Bilal, born in Cherchell in 1966, is one of the most prolific voices of the rai: hundreds of songs of love and daily life, written and composed by him.
Cheb Bilal, by his real name Bilal Moufok, was born on 23 July 1966 in Cherchell, Algeria. He began in the weddings and celebrations of Oran and Algiers, where his sentimental rai, sung in dialectal Arabic mixed with French, touched an immense popular audience.
He has been an author and composer of most of his repertoire, and has been publishing albums at an impressive pace since the 1990s. His songs — "Chriki Chriki", "Vida Loca", "Even not a call" — become classics of Maghreb evenings. Located in Marseilles, he remains close to his Algerian audience as well as to the diaspora.
In 2025–26, he continued his performances at a steady pace — "Severé A Vie", "Liquid", "Solitude" — and his concerts, such as that of the Old Port of Marseille, confirmed an unbroken popularity.
