The unique voice of the new Egyptian scene, Dina El Wedidi weaves folk, jazz and rhythms from the Nile, Cairo to scenes from all over the world.
Dina El Wedidi was born and grew up in Giza, near Cairo. She graduated in Eastern Literature from Cairo University (2008) and started in the El Warsha theatre troupe before founding her own band in 2011. She also joined the Nile Project, a group of musicians from the Nile countries (Aswan albums 2013, and Jinja, 2014).
Between 2012 and 2014, the Rolex Mentor & Protecté Arts Initiative program placed her under the wing of Brazilian Gilberto Gil, who invited her on her title "El Leil". Her first album, Turning Back (Tedawar W'Tergaa), appeared in 2014; Slumber (Manam), in 2018, was entirely built from the sounds of trains recorded in Egypt, and her third album, Khams Fosoul ("Five Seasons"), followed with five songs written with five poets.
In 2019, Time magazine ranks it among its Next Generation Leaders. On stage as well as in studio — from the Red Theatre of Abu Dhabi in 2024 to "Ya Badr" with DJ Totti and the Beena project — she pursues a free work, between Egyptian heritage and sound explorations.
