A deep voice of contemporary tarab, Ghalia Benali has been dialogued Arabic poetry, Sufism and Belgian brass from Brussels.
Ghalia Benali, born on 21 December 1968 in Brussels and raised in Tunisia, returned to Belgium at 19 years of age to study graphic arts. She found her way in singing and developed a world where classical and contemporary Arabic poetry met jazz, Indian music and Sufi traditions.
Her albums "Wild Harissa" (2001), "Romeo & Leila" (2006) and "Al Palna" (2008) set up her style, before "MwSOUL" (2017), created with the ensemble of Belgian brass Mâäk and worn by her foundation MwSOUL Art. In 2008, she received the World of Music Award from the British organization We Are Listening for the best music song in the world.
Also an actress — at Moufida Tlatli, Tony Gatlif or Leyla Bouzid — she was hailed as an "Ambassador of Arab culture in the West." In 2025 she was one of the finalists of the Aga Khan Music Awards and prepared new creations presented on her official website ghaliabenali.world.
