MaWhoo
A spiritual and powerful voice of the new South African wave, MaWhoo marries the amapiano and the 3-step with a gospel sensitivity that immediately makes it recognizable.
Thandeka Nontobeko Ngema, known as MaWhoo, was born on 16 December 1994 in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal. She graduated from the University of South Africa (UNISA), and began with the modeling and TV presentation before focusing on music, with a first single, "Umshado", alongside Heavy-K.
His album What a Time To Be Alive (2022) set up his world: an Afro-soul and an amamapiano crossed by spiritual singing, which earned him the nickname of "ancestry" voice of the new South African scene. His EP The Sound of Magic and Amazwi Okubonga confirmed this unique signature.
In 2025, she reached the top: "Bongicela" dominated the South African rankings, and "Gucci", her duo with Mthandeni SK, was named Record of the Year and Video of the Year at SAMA31.
