Born in Aswan in 1954, Mohamed Mounir, "El King", has brought Nubie's rhythms into Egyptian pop: nearly fifty years of free, joyful and deeply human songs.
Mohamed Mounir was born on October 10, 1954 in Aswan, Upper Egypt, in a Nubian family. He graduated from Cairo's fine arts, and began in the late 1970s with the album "Alemony Eneiky", produced by the poet Abdel Rahim Mansour and musician Ahmed Mounib, who opened his music to Nubian sounds.
Album after album — "Shababeek", "El Leila El Kebira" and so many others — Mounir built a unique work, a fusion of Nubian music, pop, jazz and African rhythms, carried by texts by great Egyptian poets. He led a career as an actor, notably with director Youssef Chahine in "Le Destin" (1997), where his song became emblematic.
Nicknamed "El King" by his admirers, he filled the greatest scenes in Egypt and the Arab world, and his recent titles—"Bab El Jamal", "Ana Rayea"—show an artist who is always creative and loved by all generations.
