Angkor Sankranta
Khmer New Year · Siem Reap, Cambodia
The festival
Angkor Sankranta is the great Khmer New Year's Eve (Chaul Chnam Thmey) as it is living in Siem Reap, at the foot of the temples of Angkor. Created in 2013 with the Union of Cambodia's Youth Federations, the event transforms the archaeological park and the city into a giant festival: traditional Khmer games, classical apsara dances, boat races on the Siem Reap River, artisanal and gastronomic markets, bath ceremonies of Buddha statues and water battles in the joy of the warm season.
The three days of New Year (14–16 April) follow the ritual rhythm — the welcome of the divinity of the year, the day of offerings and stupas of sand in the pagodas, the day of bathing statues and elders. In 2026, the province of Siem Reap welcomed nearly 1.85 million visitors during the holidays, according to the official AKP news agency.
