The festival
The Athens Epidaurus Festival is the great Greek festival of performing arts, between Athens and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, famous for its exceptional acoustics. It combines tragedies and ancient comedy, contemporary theatre, opera, music and dance, at the Odeon of Herod Atticus, at Peiraios 260 and in the ancient and small theatres of Epidaure.
The 2026 edition, under the artistic direction of Michail Marmarinos, opened on May 29 in Peiraios 260, which celebrated its twenty years, with Schliemann III by Heiner Goebbels. In Epidaure, the highlight was the takeover of Medea de Cherubini by the Greek National Opera on June 20, 2026, sixty-five years after the legendary production with Maria Callas.
