Battle of the Oranges — Storico Carnevale di Ivrea

To see around the festival: the three tower castle, UNESCO's Olivetti city and the Morain lakes.

Storico Carnevale occupies the historic centre of Ivrea, in the Piedmont Canavese, about 50 kilometers northeast of Turin. Here are the places to see around the battle — all in the city itself or at its doorstep.

The castle of Ivrea, the "Three Tower Castle"

The silhouette of Ivrea: a red brick fortress raised from 1358 by Amédée VI de Savoie, Count of Savoie, above the old town and the Dora Baltea. It had four cylindrical towers; the explosion of a powder-box in 1676 took one, leaving it with its current profile three towers. Prison for centuries, the castle now hosts exhibitions and events, and its courtyard offers one of the most beautiful views on the roofs of Ivrea — the city that the historic procession crosses during the Carnival.

The industrial city Olivetti — UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ivrea is also the city of Olivetti, the typewriter factory that has become a giant in computing. Between the 1930s and 1960s Adriano Olivetti built a model industrial city: glass and light factories along via Jervis (the ICO officers), housing for workers, crèches, social services and the amazing semi-entered residential unit called "Talponia". This ensemble, "Ivrea, industrial city of the twentieth century", has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018. The open-air course of MAAM (Museo a cielo aperto dell'Arhitettura Moderna) and the visitor centre via Jervis allow you to discover it freely, a few minutes walk from the battle squares.

Sirio Lake and the Five Lakes of Ivrea

At the exit of the city, the Morainic amphitheatre of Ivrea, one of the largest moraines in Europe, designed by glaciers, houses five lakes: Sirio, San Michele, Pistono, Nero and Campagna. Lake Sirio, the largest, is bordered by chestnut trees and "dancing land", these floating meadows that wave under the steps. After the smell of oranges and the noise of the tanks, it is the calm breath of Canavese.
