The festival
The Carnival of Oruro is the main festival of Bolivia, proclaimed by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity in 2001. At 3,700 meters above sea level, in the former mining town of Oruro, tens of thousands of dancers and musicians — some 50 fraternities — travel for nearly twenty hours the four kilometres of the Entrada, the great procession-pilgrimage towards the sanctuary of Virgen del Socavón.
Diablada with horn masks, morenada of miners, corporals, tinku and tobas follow each other to the sound of the band. In 2027, the festival runs from 4 to 9 February: Ch'alla on Friday 5, great Entrada on Saturday 6, Corso on Sunday 7 and Día del Diablo y del Moreno on Monday 8, day of dance stories of Diablada and Morenada.
