Carnival of Invierno
Carnaval · Punta Arenas, Chili
The festival
A carnival in the middle of the Southern winter, in negative temperatures, on the edge of the Magellan Strait: the Carnival of Invierno of Punta Arenas is the great festival of the "Invernadas", the winter celebrations of the capital of Chilean Patagonia.
Created in 1996, it celebrated its 30th anniversary on 4 and 5 July 2026: 64 alegorías — tanks and compares of schools, businesses, institutions and colonies of immigrants — marched on the Avenida Costanera del Estrecho, in front of the official gallery of Avenue Colón, after a concert opening the Bunkers on Friday 3 July. Embmituffed, the public comes in tens of thousands. The Invernadas season also includes Chapuzón del Estrecho, the collective ice bath on 27 June.
