Carnival of Recife and Olinda
Carnaval · Recife, Brésil
The festival
Two twin cities, one delusional carnival: in Recife, the Galo da Madrugada — a giant cock standing on a bridge — opens a procession on Saturday, which is recognized as the world's largest block, with more than two million partyers. In Olinda, the steep streets of the classified historic centre see the giant bonecos, these giant puppets carried at arms, including the famous Homem da Meia-Noite ("the man of midnight").
The whole to the sound of the frevo, music and acrobatic dance of Pernambuc inscribed in the intangible heritage of UNESCO in 2012, and the maracatus nação and rural, Afro-Brazilian heritage of the crowning of the kings of Congo. In 2027, the carnival runs from Saturday 6 to Wednesday of Ashes, on February 10.
