The festival

In the Kalash valleys of Chitral, spring is celebrated by dancing. Chilam Joshi is the great spring festival of the Kalash people, an indigenous community with multisearly traditions: it took place from 13 to 17 May 2026, through the three valleys of Rumbur, Birir and Bumburet. The ritual of Chirik Pipi — milk shared as a sign of purity and unity — opens the celebrations, then the stables are lined with wild flowers and walnut leaves, and milk, cheese and yogurt circulate from hand to hand.

With the sound of drums, folk dances and traditional bread with nuts tell a living heritage, before the fence in Bumburet.
