Chingay Parade
Multicultural Carnival · Singapore, Singapore
The festival
The Chingay Parade is Singapore's great multicultural parade, organized by the People's Association on the occasion of Chinese New Year. The first Chingay paraded on February 4, 1973 as a New Year's Street Party, with lion and dragon dances, martial arts and street opera.
The other communities of the city-state joined it in 1976 and the international troops from 1987 onwards: the parade celebrates today the Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian and all Singaporean communities, alongside performers from all over the world. The word "chingay" refers to the art of costume and mask in Hokkian: colorful tanks, elaborate costumes and great choreography are the signature of the parade. The parade is held at the F1 Pit Building, on two nights.
For 2027, the calendar of participants published by the Japanese Association announces February 19 and 20, still provisional dates: the final public announcement of the organiser, theme and ticket office, remains expected.
