Concurso Nacional de Marinera
Traditions · Trujillo, Pérou
The festival
Every last week in January, more than 1,500 couples of all ages, handkerchief white, compete for the title of champions of marinera, the national dance of Peru — a romantic parade inherited from colonial fandangos, danced barefoot by women in wide embroidered polleras.
The Concurso Nacional y Mundial de Marinera, organized since 1960 by the centenary Club Libertad, has made Trujillo the "national capital of the Marinera", official title since the 1986 law; the Coliseo Gran Chimú vibrates there for a week, until the category queen of Campeón de Campeones. Vigilance place: following a dispute between the Libertad Club and the town hall, the recent editions were held temporarily at the Polideportivo du Callao; the organizer confirms the seat of each edition.
