Festival of Baroque music Misiones de Chiquitos
Musique · Concepción, Bolivie
The festival
In the 1970s, the restoration of the churches of the former Jesuit missions of Bolivian Chiquitania revealed a treasure: thousands of pages of sacred music from the 17th and 18th centuries — works by Jesuit Domenico Zipoli and indigenous composers — which the villages had continued to play after the Jesuits were expelled in 1767.
Since 1996, the Asociación Pro-Arte y Cultura (APAC) has revived this repertoire in its original setting with the Festival Internacional de Música Renacentista y Barroca Americana "Misiones de Chiquitos", biennial. The 15th edition, from 17 to 26 April 2026, has aligned more than 130 concerts and a thousand artists from 16 countries, in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and in the six missionary villages classified as World Heritage UNESCO, including Concepción.
