The festival

In Pomuch, Maya village of Camino Real in Campeche, families have a unique connection with their dead: Choo Ba'ak, cleaning the holy remains. In the cemetery, you open the ossuary, gently strip each bone with a small brush, telling the deceased the year, then wrap the remains in hand embroidered towels, often in the name of the dead or with religious motifs such as crosses or doves, before placing them in their little crates.

Declared a cultural heritage of the State of Campeche in 2017, this tradition is the heart of the festival "Pomuch para el Mundo", which adds altars, Paseo de los Pixanes, pixan and craft contests. INAH points out that the festival is not limited to the 1st and 2nd November: it runs all month round, with fresh food altars prepared at home and renewed every week.
