International Festival of the Sahara of Douz

The festival

Douz, the "Porte du Sahara", becomes every winter the capital of nomads. The Sahara International Festival, one of Tunisia's oldest festivals — born of a camel festival in 1910, in its modern form since 1968 — celebrates the Bedouin traditions of southern Tunisia. Camel and grey-fed races, horse-riding fantasies, traditional struggle, poetry, music and folk dances: during a few days in December, the desert is staged and the culture of the Mrazig is told in the open air, at the gates of the dunes.
