The festival
In Pushkar, the sacred city of Rajasthan, Kartik's full moon calls the largest camel fair in the world. Pushkar Fair — Pushkar Mela on site — is an annual cattle fair where thousands of camels, horses and cattle change hands on the dunes, in a whirlwind of colourful turbans and bright saris.
Around the market, the festival is overflowing: contest of the longest moustache, matka phod, bride contests, folk music and dances, and the ritual bath of pilgrims in the sacred lake of Pushkar in Kartik Purnima. Rajasthan Tourism presents it as one of the largest cattle fairs in the world, between trade, pilgrimage and carnival of the desert.
