Gran Poder
Traditions · La Paz, Bolivia
The festival
It is called the "Fiesta Mayor de los Andes": the feast of the Señor Jesús del Gran Poder is the great devotion of La Paz, inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO in 2019. Its heart is the Fastuosa Entrada Folclórica: more than 70 fraternities, tens of thousands of dancers and musicians descend by dancing from the Gran Poder district to the center of the Bolivian capital, in morenada, corporals, kullawada and diablada, in honour of the "Tata" of the Gran Poder.
The festival is normally held on the last Saturday of May or the first of June, preceded a week earlier by the Promesa. In 2026, the roadblocks that paralyzed the country exceptionally pushed it back: Promesa on July 26, Entrada on Saturday, August 1.
