Naga Tribes Cultures — Festival of Festivals · Naga Heritage Village, Kisama (about 12 km south of Kohima), Nagaland, India
Mainstream
The festival
The festival of the 17 major tribes of Nagaland, gathered in a single village. Created in 2000 by the Nagaland government to present the Nagaland heritage "in all its ethnicity, diversity and grandeur", the Hornbill Festival takes its name from the calao (hornbill), the bird emblem present in the folklore of most tribes.
In Kisama, each tribe has dances, songs, costumes and cuisine from its morung, the traditional youth house: more than 300 events throughout the state — cultural performances, the Naga struggle, traditional archery, Naga King Chilli pepper competition and pineapple contests, crafts, looms, gastronomy and concerts, including the Hornbill Music Festival.
