Kochi-Muziris Biennale
Contemporary art · Kochi, India
The festival
Created in 2012 in Fort Kochi, in the ancient spice warehouses of the port of Kochi (Kerala), the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is India's largest contemporary art exhibition and the first biennial in the country. Each edition invests for more than three months some twenty heritage places — Aspinwall House, Pepper House, Mattancherry's warehouses — and engages Indian and international artists with the cosmopolitan history of the former Muziris counter.
The 6th edition (Commissioner Nikhil Chopra, 66 projects, more than 660,000 visitors) closed on March 31, 2026. The 7th edition will open in December 2027 under the French-Algeria artist Kader Attia, the first non-Indian commissioner of the biennial.
