The festival
The Mount Hagen Cultural Show is the great rival of the Goroka Show: each August, 70 to 90 bands of ring-sing from the Western Highlands and the whole country gather in Mount Hagen in an explosion of feathers, body paintings, drums and songs. Created in 1964 to bring the tribes closer to the region, it is held on the eve of the nearby little Paiya Show, where we approach the Asaro Mudmen, the legendary mudmen.
Highland peoples in the heart of ceremonial setting: one of the most powerful tribal shows in the world, in the heart of the Wahgi Valley.
