The festival
The National Mask Festival — the masks and the Warwagira festival — has been celebrating the masked cultures of Eastern New Britain since 1995 in Kokopo, Takubar Showground. It opens at dawn by the Kinavai: the secret tolai societies of the Tubuan and Duk-Duk arrive in pirogue in the morning light, with the sound of kundu drums and taboo exchanges, the currency of shells. At night, the Baining perform their famous fire dance, walking and dancing in flames.
Three days, from 8th to 10th July 2026, near the sacred Melanesian.
You are at a festival, a concert, a village party, a traditional party, a private party — even two or three, on a boat or on a plane? Send us your images: Festival TV analyses them, and if they are broadcast, they pass on with your name in credit. Program in preparation. All the parties of the world interest us: we want to see how different communities celebrate life and manifest their joy.
