The festival

Around Lake Pátzcuaro, the Purepechas communities celebrate the Night of Souls, Animecha Kejtzitakua, one of the most emblematic forms of the Día de Muertos: night watch in cemeteries, arches of flowers of cempasúchil, offerings and illuminated canoes on the lake. In 2026, the season extends from 23 October to 2 November with more than 700 activities announced in the seven tourist regions of Michoacán.

According to the statement of the secretariat of the Tourism of Michoacán relayed on 21 October 2026, the cemetery of Janitzio remains this year reserved for the families of the island due to rehabilitation work, visitors contemplating it from a panoramic bridge.
