São João de Caruaru
Traditions · Caruaru, Brésil
The festival
In June, the Brazilian Nordest no longer sleeps: it is the feasts julinas, in honor of St. John. Caruaru, in the interior of Pernambuk, self-proclaimed "Capital do Forró" and organizes one of the country's two largest São João — rivalry assumed with Campina Grande, her neighbour of Paraíba.
In 2026, the festival ran from May 30th to June 27th, around the Pátio de Eventos Luiz Gonzaga and 27 animation poles, with its summit on the night of St John, on June 24th: giant quadrills, bonfires, corn in all its forms and forró until dawn. The city is also that of the Alto do Moura, an immense quarter of artisans of the clay heirs of Mestre Vitalino, the largest figurative art center in clay in the Americas.
Good to know
