Shinju Matsuri — Festival of the Pearl
Traditional and popular parties · Broome, Australia
The festival
Shinju Matsuri, the "Pearl Festival," tells the soul of Broome, a small town in Kimberley built by the pearl industry and its Japanese, Malay, Chinese and Yauru Aboriginal communities. Born in 1970 from the marriage of three parties — the Japanese Obon, the Malaysian Hari Merdeka and the Chinese Hang Seng — he hosted the city for sixteen days, from 21 August to 6 September 2026.
The program includes dinner from the long table at sunset on Cable Beach, the Chinatown feast, the tank parade and floating lanterns at Floating Lantern Matsuri, as well as the awakening of the Sammy Dragon in Town Beach. A pearl and mixed-breeding festival, unique in Australia.
