Mahamadou "Mdou" Moctar Souleymane grew up in Agadez, in the desert of northern Niger. Self-taught, he made his first guitar and forged his style by watching videos of Eddie Van Halen, mixed with traditional Tuareg melodies: a flamboyant game, all in rapid arpeggios, which would become his signature.

His music first circulates throughout the Sahel via mobile phone memory cards, before the American label Sahel Sounds reveals it to the world with "Anar", then the original soundtrack of "Akounak", first fiction film in Tamasheq language, free rereading of Purple Rain of which he is the star.

"Ilana: The Creator" (2019) earned him a brilliant international recognition, confirmed by Matador Records by "Africa Victim" (2021), "Funeral for Justice" (2024) and his acoustic declination "Tears of Injustice" (2025). On stage, his band transforms each concert into a collective celebration.
