The festival

The mineral mud of Boryeong is immersed in it — and it is a hilarious and radiant occasion. Created in 1998 to promote the mineral mud cosmetics of Boryeong, it is the most famous Korean summer festival among international visitors, on Daecheon beach.

The star is the mud itself: taken from the clean muds of the coast, rich in minerals — bentonite and germanium, says the organizing foundation — it fills giant pools, slides, obstacle routes and mud "prisons" where strangers from all over the world end up best friends, even grey from head to toe. The experience area, installed at Mud Expo Plaza, is available in spaces for all: general area, family area and water park for children, not to mention massages and body painting with coloured mud.

In the evening, the festival changes its face without leaving the beach: K-pop concerts, hip hop, rock and trot, drone shows above the sea, night parades and Mud on the Beach, the celebration of feet in the sand. The 29th edition, organized by the Boryeong Festival & Tourism Foundation, was held for 17 days, from Friday 24 July to Sunday 9 August 2026; the festival, already distinguished among the three major festivals in Asia by IFEA, presents itself as the largest summer festival in the world open to all, without distinction of age or language.

To see around the festival

Boryeong is not just a mud: the coast and the hinterland deserve a detour.

  • Daecheon beach — the large sandy beach which hosts the festival: swimming, beachfront promenade and sunsets on the Yellow Sea, all year round.
  • Boryeong Mud Museum and Mud Theme Park — facing Daecheon beach: exhibitions, experiments and cosmetics to understand everything about the mud of Boryeong, in all seasons.
  • Gaehwa Art Park — in Seongju-myeon, in the hills: sculptures gardens, greenhouses and coffee in the middle of flowers, the quiet parenthesis after the mud.
