Guéréwol of the Wodaabe (Niger) — the beauty contest where the men wear the make-up
Forget everything you know about beauty pageants. At the Guérewol, it is the men who spend hours in front of the mirror — or whatever passes for one in the middle of the Sahel. Red ochre on the face, white dots drawn with care, blackened lips, jewellery, feathers, their finest clothes: the young Wodaabe, nomadic Fulani of Niger and Chad, prepare like stars. Then they dance. And the women do the choosing.
The Guérewol is held at the end of the rainy season, generally in late September, in the wake of the Cure Salée, the great gathering of nomadic herders. Its most famous setting is In-Gall, in north-western Niger, but the celebration lives wherever Wodaabe clans converge before the dry-season transhumance — as far as south-western Chad, around Dourbali. For a week: dances, dowry negotiations, camel races… and the Yaake.
The Yaake is the central dance, and it is a contest. Lined up shoulder to shoulder, arms entwined, the dancers sing and dance for hours, rolling their eyes and showing their teeth — because the Wodaabe ideal of beauty prizes height, and the whiteness of eyes and teeth. Facing them, young women judge, compare, and pick the most beautiful. From that choice may come a flirtation, a night, sometimes a marriage. A complete reversal of the usual codes — and one of the continent's most beautiful lessons in elegance.
Let's say it honestly, as we always do at Festival TV: Guérewol has no official website, no fixed published dates, no ticketing. It is a traditional pastoral gathering, carried by the clans themselves, whose calendar is similar to that of pastures. We do not "sit" it as a spectacle: we are welcomed, most often via specialized agencies in the Sahel. There is no official attendance — and that is very good. Number 3 of our Top 10 of the most unusual festivals, Guérewol is perhaps the most beautiful: the one where beauty is an art, and where men hope to be chosen.
