- BRUNSWICK'S GROWING AT GREEKHOUR!

There are streets that change countries for a day. On Sunday, October 18, at 11:00 a.m., Albion Street, in Brunswick, in the north of Melbourne, becomes Greek: souvlaki on the grill, live group and DJ, dances in circles, homemade cakes and raffles. The Brunswick Greek Festival returns — at the general request!

When the Brunswick Greek Festival opens, there is no need for a plane ticket to Athens: Greece is there, in the smoke of grills, in the warm honey of the Loukoumades and in the dance circles that form as if by magic. Behind this party, there is no promoter or big machine: there are volunteers from St Eleftherios parish, the committee led by Harry Korras alongside Father Gary, and a whole community — the Greek Community of Melbourne — that is turning back its sleeves to open its neighborhood to the world.

In the first edition, thousands of people responded: more than 500 kilos of lamb and chicken gone in souvlaki, more than 1,000 coffees served, and more than 4,600 golden loukoumads soaked in honey. Figures that tell one simple thing: here, we feed people like we welcome the family. And the family is the word that comes back: the president of the Greek Community of Melbourne, Bill Papastergiadis, summed it up in the first edition — this festival speaks of ties and families, whole generations gathered in the same place.

Grandparents find the flavours of their youth, children climb on the real fire truck of the neighborhood or caress the animals of the small farm, and between two stands of sweetness and craftsmanship, the music mounted by John Kostarakis lifts shoulders and slams the heels.

On Sunday, October 18, at 11:00 am, the party will be held again at 279 Albion Street: souvlaki on the grill, live group and DJ, Greek dances, homemade cakes and raffles. The festival will be "at the general request", as announced by the parish — the most beautiful proof that a neighborhood party, made with the heart, can become an appointment that an entire sector awaits. Greek by birth, heart Greek or simply amateur of good cuisine and beautiful atmospheres: in Brunswick, everyone has a place in the circle. Opa!
